2008 Servant Leader Award Recipients
Each year, Heartbeat International recognizes leaders who possess a servant heart for the pro-life movement. Each recipient is given a gold heart and his/her name is added to a plaque in the Heartbeat office to thank them for all of their service.
DR. ALVEDA C. KING founded King for America, Inc. “to assist people in enriching their lives
spiritually, personally, mentally and economically.” She is the daughter of the late slain civil rights activist Rev. A. D. King and his wife Naomi Barber King. Alveda is the grateful mother of six children and she is a doting grandmother.
Alveda is a minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, serving as Director of African American Outreach for Gospel of Life, headed up by Father Frank Pavone of Priests for Life. She also consults with the Africa Humanitarian Christian Fellowship, founded by her mentor, Pastor Allen McNair of Believers’ Bible Christian Church in Atlanta, Georgia.
She is a former college professor, holding the Masters of Arts degree in Business Management from Central Michigan University. Her undergraduate studies in journalism and sociology helped her to become a published author, the most popular works being her best selling books Sons Of Thunder: The King Family Legacy, and I Don’t Want Your Man, I Want My Own. This inspirational collection of Christian testimonies is used at conferences and workshops around the world.
Alveda’s Doctorate of Laws was conferred by Saint Anslem College. She has served on the boards and committees of numerous organizations Coalition Of African American Pastors, and the Judeo-Christian Coalition For Constitutional Restoration. She also served in the Georgia State House of Representatives, and is an accomplished actress and songwriter. She is a voice for the Silent No More Awareness Campaign, speaking about her regret for her abortion.
JULIE PARTON, PH.D.’s background and experience shape a unique perspective (at both the local and national levels) on the work of pregnancy resource centers. She founded and directed the Prestonwood Pregnancy Center in Dallas; she served on the board of Life Network, a pregnancy center ministry in Colorado Springs; she directed the national and international work of Focus on the Family with some 2500 pregnancy centers worldwide; and she now serves on the board of Heartbeat International, a national affiliate organization for such centers.
In previous years she taught the Dallas class of Bible Study Fellowship (BSF) and also served on staff at the Minirith-Meier Clinic. Both her M.Ed. and her Ph.D. are in the field of counseling. Dr. Parton and her husband Paul moved back to the Dallas area in 2005 in order to be near their 3 grown daughters and 7 adorable grandchildren (including 2-year-old triplets!) She now teaches at Dallas Baptist University and does speaking and training for pregnancy centers.
PAT LAYTON is Founder and President of A Woman’s Place Ministries, Inc., in Tampa, Florida. A Woman’s Place began in 1986 as a post-abortion healing ministry called “Sisters of Rachel.” The ministry expanded in 1999 by offering a full-service abstinence education program that reaches out to young people in the community with facts, fun, and fellowship.
Pat is a national speaker and trainer. She has produced a daily radio segment, “A Word for Women” and writes articles for newspapers, newsletters, and ministry media, including Focus on the Family and Concerned Women for America. Her personal story was also published by Baker Books, appearing in Loved by Choice (2002). Pat’s most recent published article, entitled “Out of the Darkness”, appeared in the January 2007 edition of HomeLife Magazine. In March 2007, Serendipity House, a division of LifeWay, released her post-abortion healing Bible Study called Surrendering the Secret. LifeWay will be releasing an updated version of Surrendering the Secret member book in January of 2008. In addition a leader’s guide and DVD series will be released at that time.
Pat keeps busy as a speaker and writer as well as wife, mother of three, and a grandmother of four. Someday, when life slows down, her secret desire is to write inspirational romance novels. Her determined purpose is to experience God more passionately each and every day of her life, and for that passion to make a Kingdom difference in the lives of others.
EDWARD & BARBARA MWANSA direct the Silent Voices Resource Center and is a long-time friend and affiliate of HB. This will be her first HB conference since 2003 (Edward has attended two since then).
