This unique Bible study sets itself apart from other grief recovery curricula by addressing multiple relationship crises from a multicultural perspective and by combining science with spirituality. Women healing from domestic violence, sexual violence, or post-abortion grief can participate in the 10-week program on their own or in a group.The Second Woman Bible Study—which takes its name from the story of King Solomon’s ruling regarding a child and two possible mothers in 1 Kings 3—offers guidance to women who have endured traumatic experiences or made life choices they regret.

Each week, the study focuses on one of the 10 processes of change or interventions that encourage change based on the Transtheoretical Model of Change, developed by psychologist James Prochaska.

The author Dr. Penny R. Smith, is the survivor of date rape, and domestic violence. She is the mother of Kenaniah Armstrong whose name means “rooted in Yahweh” and an unborn child due to an abortion at age 19 posthumously named Zoe, meaning, “God kind of life”. Penny R. Smith earned an undergraduate degree from Fisk University as well as her M.Ed. and Ed.D. degrees in education from Vanderbilt University. She later attended AsburyTheological Seminary. 

As a component of Dr. Smith’s ministry, she is interested in collecting data and conducting research on the impact of the 10 week study on the attitudes of women. She dares to collide research with religion as she studies the research question, “Do women who complete a 10 week intervention based on the Transtheoretical Model of Change have different attitudes about sexual violence, domestic violence or post-abortion grief at the end of the intervention?”
